A Danish man who posed a video of himself setting fire to the Quran on Facebook has been charged with blasphemy in the first such prosecution for 46 years. The 42-year-old suspect put the clip, entitled “Consider your neighbour: it stinks when it burns” to a group called “YES TO FREEDOM – NO TO ISLAM” in December 2015. Jan Reckendorff, from the public prosecutor’s office in Viborg, said: “It is the prosecution’s view that circumstances involving the burning of holy books such as the Bible and the Quran can in some cases be a violation of the blasphemy clause, which covers public scorn or mockery of religion. “It is our opinion that the circumstances of this case mean it should be prosecuted so the courts now have an opportunity to take a position on the matter.” Judges in Aalborg will heard the case, although a date has not yet been set. The maximum sentence for blasphemy is four months in prison but Mr Reckendorff said prosecutors were more likely to seek a fine. Copies of the Quran are treated with reverence by Muslims and any move to desecrate or destroy the holy book is seen as a grave insult. Rumours of Quran burnings have sparked arrests, lynchings and riots in Muslim-majority countries, while the move has been appropriated by the far-right and anti-Islamic groups, including the Westboro Baptist Church in America.

http://ahmadiyyawatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Danish-man-who-videoed-himself-burning-the-Quran-charged-wit.mp4

Under clause 140 of Denmark’s penal code, anyone can be imprisoned or fined for publicly insulting or degrading religious doctrines or worship. Only four blasphemy prosecutions have ever been attempted in the country. The last was in 1971, when two Denmark Radio producers were acquitted after airing a song mocking Christianity. Two people were previously fined in 1946 after acting out a “baptism” at a ball in Copenhagen, while four others were sentenced for putting up anti-Semitic posters and leaflets in 1938. At least a dozen other cases have been considered but not charged, including in 2006 when prosecutors decided to stop an investigation into the Jyllands-Posten newspaper over a controversial set of caricatures under the headline “The Face of Mohamed”. The publication sparked protests around the world, with insulting the Prophet seen as a grave offence to Muslims and Islamic scholars interpreting Quran verses on idolatry to forbid any representation of Mohamed.

LAHORE: Majlis-e-Ahrar, the religious party struggling to protect the finality of Prophet (SAW) against Qadiyanis’ hijacking of Islam in the subcontinent for over one hundred years, has rejected the highly controversial legislation of Sindh Assembly which bars any non-Muslim under 18 years of age to embrace Islam in the country, and also bars any adult Muslim convert to announce his new religion within 21 days of his becoming Muslim.
Majlis Ahrar secretary general Abdul Latif Khalid Cheema and deputy secretary general Qari Yusuf Ahrar, have warned that the legislation was against Quran and Sunnah, and the very objectives of creation of Pakistan as an Islamic state. They alleged that the legislation was a continuation of foreign agenda being pursued by Pakistani legislators on the behest of their foreign masters, and expressed sorrow that PPP’s present leadership was being used for this ugly agenda despite that its founding chairman ZA Bhutto was the pioneer who enacted an Islamic constitution declaring the country an Islamic state by protecting it against all secularist conspiracies 45 years ago.

LAHORE:
A Christian man was given the death penalty on Thursday on charges of blasphemy. Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhry Ghulam Mustafa announced the verdict at the trial held in jail due to security concerns.
Sawan Masih, a resident of Joseph Colony and the father of two, was also fined Rs200,000. The incident of blasphemy was followed by the arson at Joseph Colony, a Christian locality, where more than 200 houses were destroyed in 2013.
Seven witnesses recorded their statements against Sawan during the trial while two appeared in his favour. In his statement before the court, Sawan said he did not commit any blasphemy and accused Shahid Imran, the complainant in the FIR, and Shafiq Ahmed, who he says have made him the scapegoat in the case.
On March 7, 2013, hundreds of protesters set ablaze more than 200 houses belonging to Christians in Joseph Colony, after Sawan was accused of blasphemy. Three churches were also burnt in the locality. A day before the incident, police forced the Christians to vacate their houses, saying they would also be attacked otherwise.
An FIR was registered under the Anti Terrorism Act against 83 people accused of the arson; a supplementary statement nominated 50 more in the FIR. The case is still pending in the Anti Terrorism Courts.

January 24, 2014 ISLAMABAD:

A court in Rawalpindi sentenced a self-proclaimed prophet to death on Thursday after convicting him of blasphemy. Additional district and sessions judge Naveed Iqbal also imposed a fine of Rs1 million on Mohammad Asghar, a 65-year-old British national. Asghar was arrested in Sadiqabad in 2010 after he wrote letters to different people, a police officer among them, claiming that he was a prophet. Police booked Asghar under section 295-C of the PPC. The section reads: “Whoever by words, either spoken or written, or by visible representation or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), shall be punished with death or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine.” Public prosecutor Javed Gul produced before the court a copy of letters which Asghar wrote to an SHO of Sadiqabad. Four police officials testified against Asghar. The prosecution also submitted opinions of handwriting experts testifying that the letters were written by the accused. In addition to the above-mentioned evidence, the prosecution used Asghar’s confessional statement to support its case. Initially Sarah Bilal of Lahore appeared as defence counsel but later the government appointed a lawyer for Asghar’s defence after she expressed reluctance in pursuing the case. The defence lawyer contended that since Asghar was suffering from mental disorder, his case should be treated on humanitarian grounds. The court constituted a medical board to verify the lawyer’s contention. But the medical board said in its report that Asghar was psychologically stable and did not suffer from any disorder.

Multan.JUP to oppose amend to blasphemy law: Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP-Noorani) Senior Vice President Shah Owais Noorani has said that any amendment in blasphemy law will be rejected, asking Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf President Makhdoom Javed Hashmi to seek pardon on his statement regarding blasphemy law instead of beating about the bush.
Talking to a local delegation of JUP here on Monday, he added that the statement given by Javed Hashmi in National Assembly hurt the sentiments of all Muslims and Hashmi must seek forgiveness from Allah.
He maintained that the slaves of West continuously targeted blasphemy law to appease their foreign masters. He added that the statements given by misled elements shook Pakistanis, who would thwart all conspiracies hatched by the enemies of Islam.
